When is the right time to go on Social Security?

And how do you know?

The decision to go on Social Security is a fairly routine decision for many people. But not for some!

There are or can be a number of factors to consider before settling on a decision. And it is not only “higher income” individuals who need to weigh things carefully. For instance:
  • Are you still working? For how long? Depending on your present age, you may experience a direct SocSec reduction because of your earned income (age dependent)
  • There may be a spouse’s income to consider. A spouse presently living—or not. Is your Social Security income lower or higher? Do you take a spousal benefit now? Your SocSec income or your deceased spouse’s benefit?
  • What about the tax cost of receiving SocSec income? Beyond what one typically thinks about in terms of “tax bracket” or “marginal tax rate”. Because, the real incremental tax cost of that SocSec income can approach 50%!
  • Does that additional income impact your Medicare Part B & Part D premium? It certainly could, and the relative additional amount can be a large percentage of the SocSec benefit itself.
This can be complicated. Often is not, but often it is. That is why you may benefit from expert analysis, expert advice, and help in working through to your best decisions. We can help you!
